As part of the uncertainty surrounding the availability of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel, DNV GL is to conduct a study on the LNG market in the European Union (EU) to help drive the development of an EU LNG network.
The study, which has a budget of EUR 33 million and is expected to be completed in December 2020, will be carried out on behalf on the CORE LNGas Hive project that aims to develop a safe and efficient, integrated logistics and supply chain for LNG in the transport industry, particularly for transport off the Iberian Peninsula.
The CORE LNGas Hive project, which is co-funded by the European Commission and coordinated by Enagas, will provide recommendations for the Spanish and Portuguese National Policy Frameworks for alternative fuels supply infrastructure, and will prepare the roll-out plan for future commercial deployment along the Mediterranean and Atlantic corridors in the Iberian Peninsula.
DNV GL was chosen for the study due to the company’s experience with LNG and its involvement in supporting and operating 35% of the world’s LNG plants. According to Liv Hovem, DNV GL Regional Manager for Continental Europa and North and East Africa, more research into LNG fuel availability would enable ship owners to consider LNG more seriously.
The class society is also supporting the use of LNG as fuel in the industry through the development of its new LNGi tool that provides up-to-date information on LNG availability across the globe. This tool shows both data for availability and bunkering opportunities throughout the world via an interactive map and data on existing and planned infrastructures. Statistics and further information on alternative fuels and emissions solutions, such as scrubbers, give a broader overview of the most popular options to achieve compliance with stringent environmental regulations.
DNV GL has also updated the Recommended Practice (RP) for development and operation of LNG bunkering facilities (DNVGL-RP-G105), which provides guidance on performing quality measurements and quantity metering of LNG fuel supply in order to help the uptake of LNG and drive a more transparent market for sustainable growth.
