Don’t Go Dumping That Waste! Recent $1M Fine

29 Oct 3

Chandris (Hellas) are suffering the consequences of their actions after pleading guilty to concealing pollution that had been dumped from one of their vessels, the M/V Sestrea.

It was at the Corpus Christi federal court (Texas) on Tuesday this week (27th October 2015) that the company pleaded guilty to violations of the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships.

The crude oil tanker had dumped oily waste directly in to the waters of the Texas Gulf Coast during a multi-port call trip in Texas in January.

According to court reports the chief engineer had failed to document that this waste, which should have been disposed of through oily water separators and incinerators, had been discharged.

They agreed to pay penalties of $1M and the company was placed on probation for 3 years.
