ECSA President Stresses Importance of Global Maritime Emissions Agreement

The president of the European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA) has stated that shipping needs to come together, along with other industry sectors, to be part of the solution to limit increases in global temperature.

Addressing a symposium on decarbonisation of shipping held in Antwerp on June 21, 2016, ECSA President Niels Smedegaard emphasised the importance of a global agreement for maritime emissions.

Smedegaard also reinforced the need for the proper implementation of the European Union (EU) Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) regulation, ensuring that it is now correctly aligned with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) data collection system to be formalised in October this year.

ECSA, Wärtsilä and the Royal Belgian Shipowners’ Association initiated the symposium in order to bring together ship owners with engine makers, ship yards, ship designers, academia and port authorities to map out technical measures that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
