Energy Saving Solution Reaps 5% Fuel Savings with Controllable Pitch Propellers

Wärtsilä’s energy saving solution, EnergoProFin, has now become available for controllable pitch propellers (CPP) as well as fixed pitch propellers (FPP) to increase propeller efficiency and reap fuel savings of up to 5%.

EnergoProFin is a propeller cap that has been specially designed with hydrofoil section fins on the downstream side of the propeller that works to reduce both fuel consumption and emissions from a ship. It minimises the losses in the vortex leaving the propeller by transforming the rotational energy into effective thrust to increase efficiency.

Previously it was more difficult to offer the same energy saving solution for CPP’s as for FPP’s as they are technologically more challenging, however, this has been made possible now due to the work Wärtsilä’s hydrodynamics team has carried out.

EnergoProFin can be easily mounted for propulsion upgrades of existing vessels without the need for complex structural changes. Payback time is around two years but can be achieved in just one year.

Tamara de Gruyter, Vice President, Propulsion System Services, Wärtsilä Services commented:”Customers in today’s uncertain economic situation need solutions that are reliable, cost-effective and easy to invest in. Energy efficiency solutions in general are a sound investment, as their impact on both operating costs and environmental compliance is a lasting one. We want to help ship operators optimise their existing assets, and that is exactly what Wärtsilä EnergoProFin does, now for controlled pitch propellers as well.”
