ESL Shipping to Fit Innovative Propulsion Tech to Dual-Fuel Bulkers

ESL Shipping Ltd., is to install WE Tech Solutions’ (WE Tech) direct drive permanent magnet shaft generator solution to two of its newbuild vessels, which are to be the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel handysize bulk carriers in the world.

The WE Drive Power Take Out (PTO) mode enables propulsion machinery to operate in combinator/variable speed while the direct-drive permanent magnet shaft generator produces electrical power up to 700 kW for the vessel’s electrical network. This can significantly reduce the operating hours of the auxiliary generators to reduce cost and maintenance.

The Power Take In (PTI) mode can also be utilised to convert auxiliary generator power to propulsion power by employing the direct-drive permanent magnet shaft generator as an electrical motor. This enables the propulsion system to be boosted with 1250 kW mechanical power when operating in demanding conditions.

The new 25,600 DWT ships to which the WE Tech solutions are to be fitted are approved to Ice-class 1A.  The addition of this solution to ESL Shipping’s vessels is in line with its sustainability strategy and drive for greener shipping.

The ships are to be built at Qingshan Shipyard of Sinotrans & CSC SBICO in China and will begin operation in the Baltic Sea in early 2018, following the WE Tech delivery in March 2017.
