EU and UNDP Join Forces To Research Black Sea Pollution

The European Union (EU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have partnered for a project that will research the organic pollutants and large-scale marine litter problem in the Black Sea and improve environmental monitoring.

Scientists from Georgia, Ukraine and five EU Member States will examine the Black Sea and its coastal environment in Georgia and Ukraine.  The research involves governmental and academic agencies from Ukraine and for the first time Georgia and its National Environment Agency (NEA) is involved in the research project.

The research will involve the use of a Romanian research ship, the Mare Nigrum, which has already begun the first part of the project by departing from Odessa on the Ukrainian side of the Black Sea last Monday (May 23).  The ship aims to reach Batumi, Georgia by May 27.

The ship will collect sea samples en-route where the crew will measure environmental parameters in the economic zones of Georgia and Ukraine in addition to the deep waters in the central part of the Black Sea.

The Black Sea research involves governmental and academic agencies from Ukraine and Georgia, including Georgia’s National Environment Agency (NEA).
