European Parliament supports ban of HFO in the Arctic

The European Parliament has encouraged member states to reduce their use of heavy fuel oil in the Arctic by supporting a pass on the Resolution on the Arctic.

The Resolution is a non-legislative document that represents the European Parliament’s position regarding the Joint Arctic Communication.

This Joint Arctic Communication guides the actions of the EU in the Arctic and future policy. It outlines the EU’s policy on international cooperation in response to climate change and promoting sustainable development, including the use of marine fuels in the Arctic.

By voting to pass the Resolution, the European Parliament encourages member states to enact their own laws in common legislation, which in this case is the Resolution on the Arctic.

The Clean Arctic Alliance has welcomed the decision of the European Parliament and says that this sends a clear message to the IMO regarding the opinion of European citizens on the use of HFO in the Arctic.

Transport & Environment also supports the European Parliament’s call for the ban and agrees that it gives a clear signal to EU member states that HFO needs to be on the IMO’s agenda for the next meeting.

The text of the European Parliament has been made available and can be viewed here.
