NGO Shipbreaking Platform has revealed that the dismantling of ships shows no improvement in the shipping industry’s management of its end-of-life vessels and claims that European ship owners are the worst for leaving ships to breakdown on South Asian beaches.
- NGO analysed a database of ships, revealing that in 2016 668 vessels were broken down on tidal beaches.
- NGO found that 84% of all European end-of-life ships ended up in India, Pakistan or Bangladesh
- It claims that “the shipping industry is nowhere close to ensuring sustainable ship recycling practices”.
- Beached ships increase threat to workers, the environment and local communities.
- Shipbreaking Platform’s data research also found Maersk took a U-turn in ship recycling policy and has gone back to shipbreaking beaches of India, and this year will have to get rid of 75-100 ships.
- 2017 EU to publish first of its kind list of ship recycling facilities that comply with workers’ safety and environmental protection.
