Fiji has acceded to six International Maritime Organization (IMO) treaties including the Ballast Water Management Convention.
Fiji’s ratification of the Ballast Water Management Convention brings the number of States party to the BWMC to 49, representing 34.82% of the world’s merchant fleet tonnage.
However, as Fiji does not have any ratified tonnage, it does not move the Convention any closer to entering into force at this stage and still requires a further 0.18% to for implementation.
Fiji also revealed it has acceded to the International Convention on Salvage, 1989; the International Convention on Civil Liability for Bunker Oil Pollution Damage, 2001; the Protocol of 1978 relating to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 1973, including acceptance of Optional Annexes IV and V to MARPOL 73/78; the International Convention on the Control of Harmful Anti-Fouling Systems on Ships, 200; and the Convention on the International Mobile Satellite Organization, as amended.
