First Norwegian Vessel Gets Polar Code Certified

Simon Møkster Shipping AS is the first Norwegian ship owner to receive polar ship certificate from DNV GL and the Norwegian Maritime Authority for its M/V Stril Polar.

The vessel has been built for operation in cold climates and required only minor adjustments to make it compliant with the recently ratified Polar Code under the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which sets a minimum standard for ships entering into Arctic waters or Antarctica.

The Stril Polar underwent risk assessment by DNV GL, which included a review of its operational profile and equipment to ensure that the requirements of the code were met. Following the inspection, no deviations from the Code were found, making the vessel the first Norwegian ship with a Polar Code certification.

The Polar Code will apply to all new SOLAS-registered ships operating in Arctic and Antarctic waters from January 1, 2017.  For existing ships, the Polar Code certification is required after the first intermediate or renewal inspection after January 1, 2018.
