Fjord1 has signed a newbuilding contract with the Tersan Shipyard to provide two new battery-powered ferries.
This battery technology will enable the ferries to run for several hours without charging.
The new generation ferries are to be built using a flexible design, developed with a high focus on environmentally friendly solutions and energy efficiency.
Although the Norwegian Road Administration, which is authorised to grant subsidies for ferry operations, has allowed for partly hybrid operation using biodiesel or biogas on one of the ferries, Fjord1 is planning for fully electric operation of both ferries.
Charging of batteries will be done through fully automatic charging stations at the quayside.
Norwegian ship designer, engineer and consultancy firm, Multi Maritime, has developed the design in close cooperation with Fjord1 for the ferries which will operate on the E39 Anda-Lote route, Norway.
Construction of the ferries will commence in October this year and are expected to be operational from 1 January 2018 until 2027.
