Fjord1 has selected Siemens to provide electric propulsion systems for two newbuild ferries that will be operational on 100% battery power.
This contract marks the first four battery-driven ferries in the world to be run on technology developed and manufactured by Siemens following the delivery of a propulsion system for FinFerries in early 2016.
Siemens will install a complete integrated electric power and automation solution on each ferry including the BlueDrive PlusC, which includes lithium-ion batteries for energy storage and thruster, a remote control for the propellers, an energy management system and an integrated alarm and monitoring system.
The ferries will operate the E39 Anda-Lote route on the west coast of Norway and will be able to charge their energy storage systems on each side of the crossing using a shore connection to the local electricity grid. Monitoring is to be done from the ferries based on Wi-Fi communication.
Fjord1 day that they chose the electric battery-powered ferries to ensure maximum benefit for the environment and because it made financial sense.
The ferries will begin operation in January 2018. This route on the west coast of Norway is the first ferry connection where the country’s Road Administration requires the use of zero-emission technology.
