Flinter Management Win Ship Efficiency ‘Initiative of the Year’ Award

The Dutch ship operator was presented with the award at the 3rd annual Ship Efficiency Awards, hosted by Lloyd’s Register and organised by Fathom Maritime Intelligence.

Flinter clinched the Initiative of the Year award for their leadership role in driving a consortium of five companies, their ship efficiency research fuelled by Flinter’s provision of big data from one of their vessels. The Nordic Erika was the vessel sat at the core of the collaborative research, with the consortium seeking to find the most suitable propulsion configurations and settings for the vessel, given its operational profile.

The Data provided was used for calculations to find the optimum where fuel consumption per mile is at a minimum for every ship speed, engine speed and propeller pitch.

Data of several trips was analysed, using real-time ship positioning (AIS) data, measurement data and weather data (waves, wind, currents). Based on these insights, seven different technologies were analysed on their fuel saving potential.

This approach and the resulting advice presented very good results for fuel economy, varying from 9% to 25% fuel savings. The fuel savings are also related to ship speed: the lower the speed, the more effect on fuel saving: (varying from 9% at 11 knots to around 25% at 9 knots).

The result was a 200 litres a day fuel saving and 20% lower Co2 emissions.

After the success of this project, a separate company (We4Sea) was founded to bring this technology to the market. This company recently launched their Big Data Platform.
