The World Shipping Council, BIMCO, and the International Parcel Tankers Association have filed a proposal for the International Maritime Organization to consider in developing the Greenhouse Gas Strategy for the shipping industry.
- Proposal calls for ambitious objectives to be included in the GHG Strategy, the establishment of a maritime R&D development programme to develop new technologies for carbon reduction, and an investment programme.
- Organisations urge the IMO to consider a long-term vision for GHG reduction to meet the Paris Agreement target of keeping global temperature rise below 2 degrees Celsius.
- They say that R&D is critical to this and to lower the global fleet’s carbon footprint by identifying what technology advances can be made and what can be applied in the immediate future.
