Hamburg Süd Lowers CO2e Emissions by 35%

Hamburg Süd recently published a Sustainability Report which details the significant progress they have made towards achieving their environmental targets for CO2e reduction and their involvement in wider sustainability activities.

Their environmental target aims to lower CO2e emissions (carbon dioxide equivalent, expressing other greenhouse gas emissions in terms of their CO2) by 45% by 2020.

To-date, the company reports that a 35% drop in CO2e emissions was achieved by 2015 compared with 2009, which they attribute to measures relating to ship design and ship operation.

The report also details how the company has made progress in water pollution and endangered species protection by exchanging ballast water at sea and banning the transportation of shark fins on a voluntary basis.   In March 2016, Hamburg Süd also joined the “United for Wildlife” initiative.
