High Performance Computing & CFD Makes Scrubber Functions More Efficient

Ecospec Technology Pte worked extensively with researchers from the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (ASTAR) Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC), Singapore and Sembcorp Marine Ltd to develop the SOx-reducing, exhaust gas cleaning system cSOx.

Through the use of high performance computing and computational fluid dynamic (CFD), the scientists and researchers were able to better understand how the flow of an exhaust gas functions within the EGCS and optimised the design in order to make it as efficient as possible.

The companies have now revealed that the verification of the CFD analysis was carried with site measurements, and this in turn, enabled design improvements to be developed for better performance.

In early 2015, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by IHPC, Sembcorp Marine Ltd and the University of Glasgow to design ships with improved hydrodynamics for better fuel efficiency and further enhancing the exhaust gas cleaning and ballast water treatment systems developed by Sembcorp Marine Ltd and Ecospec Technology Pte Ltd.
