How to overcome digital transformation roadblocks in shipbuilding

Press Release: A new white paper was released today that addresses the most pressing digital transformation challenges for shipbuilding executives and how to identify and resolve them.

(Marine NewsWire) SSI, the shipbuilding solution company, has released a new whitepaper for shipbuilding executives entitled “Tackling Roadblocks to Achieve True Shipbuilding Digital Transformation,” outlining the causes, effects, and remedies for the most challenging shipbuilding business transformation barriers.

The whitepaper covers four major transformation roadblock categories that contribute to failure: data fragmentation, poor information retrieval, inefficient change management, and scalability issues. In addition, it provides a framework for leaders to structure their digital initiatives around.

More shipyards than ever are committing to digital transformation. However, estimates suggest that anywhere from half to almost all digital transformations fail. Identifying and addressing the causes of failure can result in lower costs for shipyards, less risk to ongoing projects, and the potential to see a greater return on digital investment.

“Every single shipyard is going through changes driven by the modern age of digital technology,” said SSI co-CEO Denis Morais. “However, we need to understand that to embrace the full potential of digital shipbuilding requires an understanding of the most common organizational pitfalls.”

Shipbuilders have already found success with digital tools. 3D product models, digitized output, and digital enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems are commonplace. However, these individual pieces do not constitute a digital architecture or digital-first organization. In reality, a significant amount of data is left out of that digital sphere, and the captured information cannot be trusted by every department all the time.

With a clear understanding of the approach required within the shipbuilding industry, shipyards will be more confident and successful as they transition to a digital-first information strategy.
