Hurtigruten Cruises Plans a Greener Future

Hurtigruten Cruises has revealed that it is to install environmentally friendly technologies to its newbuild ships and explore battery power propulsion for future operations.

The cruise line is to add four expedition style ships to its fleet that will feature a range of technologies to reduce emissions and the impact of tourist ships across the Arctic and Antarctic regions. These Arctic and Antarctic exploration ships are to be built by Kleven Maritime, a Norwegian ship builder and are due for delivery in 2018 and 2019.

Furthermore, the cruise line says it won’t be many years down the line until Hurtigruten has battery packs on-board.  The company has already introduced shore power and claims to be reducing emissions while in port, up to 1,600 tonnes of nitrogen oxides (NOx) just at the Port of Bergen per year.

The company has stated that it is working with engineers to develop further technologies for reducing emissions and is in the process of developing ships that could travel on battery power for between two and four hours, switching to algae based fuels until a charging point is available.
