The International Chamber of Shipping has urged the IMO to make a decision on the required start date for ships to install ballast water management systems to reduce shipowner and operator uncertainty.
- Brazil, Cook Islands, India, Norway, Liberia and United Kingdom propose that BWMS should start to be installed on or after September 8, 2019, extending the date by which all ships must have installed a system to 2024 from 2022.
- Peter Hinchliffe, ICS Secretary General, says it would allow shipping companies to identify and invest in far more robust technology to the benefit of the marine environment.
- IMO will need to make a decision during MEPC 71 in July so that shipping companies can start to make decisions based on the implementation date.
The Marine Environment Protection Committee’s 71st session will be held July 3-7 at the IMO headquarters in London.
