IMO and EC Collaborate To Drive Emissions Reductions

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is to collaborate with the European Commission (EC) to reduce emissions from the shipping industry.

Following a meeting in Brussels to this Tuesday (February 9), IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim and European Transport Commissioner, Violeta Bulc, announced that the EC is fully behind the IMO in its efforts to reduce shipping emissions.

The EC is in full support of the notion that an international regulatory framework developed by the IMO is what is required to help govern shipping and its emissions.  Violeta Bulc also pledged her support for active cooperation between the Commission and the IMO.

Already this year, the IMO announced that the EC is to provide €10 million towards a project establishing a global network of Maritime Technology Cooperation Centres (MTTCs) in developing countries, allowing the project to go ahead.
