IMO announces International Maritime University of Panama to be regional MTCC host

The IMO has announced that the International Maritime University of Panama will host one of the regional Maritime Technology Cooperation Centres being established by the organisation to promote the use of low carbon solutions in shipping.

  • It’s the fourth MTCC to be allocated and will cover the Latin America region. Other MTCCs have been allocated in Kenya to cover Africa, Shanghai for the Asia region and in Trinidad and Tobago to cover the Caribbean region.  One further MTCC will be established in the Pacific, to form a global network of five centres.
  • Initial support for the five centres came from  €10m European Union funding.
  • The IMO says they  “will be resourced to become regional centres of excellence, providing leadership in promoting ship energy-efficiency technologies and operations, and the reduction of harmful emissions from ships.”
