The International Maritime Organization has been called upon by environmentalists and academics to investigate the use of tin in silicone-based and other hull fouling coatings.
- Organotin tributyltin was banned 10 years ago but organotin is still permitted for use as a catalyst.
- Organotin has been found to spread tin compounds, kill marine life and cause molluscs to change sex.
- Boud Van Rompay, chairman of Subsea Industries, the manufacturer of the Ecospeed hull coating system questions whether silicone-based hull coatings are relying on the presence of organotins as an active ingredient to prevent fouling, rather than a catalyst to deliver ‘non-stick’ properties to the coating.
