The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has announced that the process to verify the global tonnage figures conducted to confirm if the spate of ratifications in late 2015 had tipped the requirements for entry into force of the Ballast Water Convention, has now been completed.
A total of forty-seven countries have now ratified the Convention, 17 more than required. The combined fleets of these countries total 34.35% of the global tonnage, just short of the 35% required for entry into force.
IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim reiterated his request to countries that have not already done so, to ratify the Convention as soon as possible in order to establish a certain date for entry into force, which will facilitate the work to make any necessary amendments to the Convention.
