IMO marks 50 years since Torrey Canyon disaster and start of strict anti-pollution rules

NEW exhibition at International Maritime Organization headquarters celebrates half century of oil spill regulations.

What you need to know:

  • Torrey Canyon split in two off the UK coast in March 1967 spilling over 100,000 tonnes crude oil.
  • The disaster led directly to the creation of Marpol (International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution) and the IOPC (International Oil Pollution Compensation) funds.
  • IMO says its exhibition shows off 50 years of rules changes that have seen oil pollution incidents reduce by 80%.
  • The exhibition also shows off the collaboration that has been possible between industry and governments.
  • The exhibition will run until early July.
