IMO meeting set to adopt passenger ship safety requirements

The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Maritime Safety Committee, which is meeting this week, is to revise and expected to adopt safety requirements of passenger ships to ensure that newbuilds remain afloat following a major incident.

  • It will review safety recommendations that arose from the investigation into the Costa Concordia incident.
  • Revisions will be made to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) chapter II-1, relating to subdivision and damage stability, follow a review of SOLAS chapter II-1, focusing in particular on passenger ships.
  • MSC will also begin to scope an exercise on how to determine the safe, secure and environmentally sound operation of autonomous ships can be introduced into IMO instruments.
