Indian Navy Orders 14 Fuel Efficient Engines

The Indian Navy is to fit seven newbuild ships each with two MAN engines that offer specific fuel oil consumption (SFOC) and long overhaul intervals for reduced maintenance.

The 14 MAN 12V 28/33D STC engines will be installed to 7 P-17A frigates.  The MAN 28/33D STC engine features an advanced electronic fuel injection system that improves SFOC, reduces nitrogen oxides (NOx) formation and smoke emissions.   The engines are compliant with International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier II standards and EPA Tier II regulations.

The robust engines are have also been designed with a maintenance-friendly ethos in mind, enabling all of the maintenance work to be carried out up to major overhaul without removing the engine from the vessel. This increases the operational window of the ship and further reduces the maintenance required.

Each ship will also feature state-of-the-art technology and will be built with new modular construction techniques to reduce construction time.

The ships are to be built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd., Mumbai, India and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers, Kolkata, India. The first ship is expected to begin construction in 2017 with completion anticipated for 2023.
