Indonesia & Morocco Ratify Ballast Water Management Convention

24 Nov

Both Indonesia and Morocco have ratified the Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention.

Indonesia’s Minister of Transportation, H.E. Mr. Ignasius Jonan, deposited the instrument of acceptance during the 29th session of the IMO Assembly today (November 24).

Morroco’s Transport Minister Mr. Rebbah and H.H. Princess Lalla Joumala Alaoui handed over the instrument of ratification to IMO Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu yestetday (November 23).

When Morocco put forward its ratification at the session on Monday, the aggregate tonnage was totalled to 32.93 percent of the required 35 percent needed to meet entry into force criteria.

Now that Indonesia have also ratified, the IMO is verifying of gross tonnage data on the country’s registered fleet.

An announcement on if Indonesia tipped the tonnage requirements over 35 percent is yet to arrive.

However, Finland has been tipped to also make its ratification this week meaning that the tonnage requirement is almost certain to be met.

The BWM Convention aims to prevent the spread of harmful and invasive aquatic species in ships’ ballast water and requires ships to have procedures in place for ballast water management.
