Industry’s First LNG-Powered Icebreaker Delivered

The Finnish Transport Agency has taken delivery of the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered icebreaker.

The icebreaker design features an innovative hull and propulsion unit in order to enable compatibility with either LNG or low-sulphur diesel fuel oil. The vessel complies with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier III nitrogen oxides (NOx) emission standards and sulphur Emission Control Areas (ECAs) requirements.

Three Azipod propulsion units that can rotate 360° have been installed on the ice-breaker that enables ease of manoeuvring the vessel to increase efficiency and reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

The prototype vessel was built at the Arctech Helsinki Shipyard, Finland, and will join the Finnish icebreaker fleet, icebreaker Polaris. Arctia Icebreaking Oy will operate the vessel.
