JHW Engineering & Contracting Choose PureNOx Prime EGR Tech For VLECs

JHW Engineering & Contracting has chosen to install Alfa Laval’s PureNOx Prime exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems on five of its newbuild very large ethane carriers (VLEC).

The VLEC newbuilds will use EGR to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions.  The EGR engines, which are manufactured by for MAN Diesel & Turbo by Hyundai Heavy Industries Engine & Machinery Division (HHI-EMD), will use PureNOx Prime to treat the water from the EGR process. PureNOx Prime is that much smaller than the original PureNOx due to its leaner design and requires a lower investment cost, while maintaining the same performance.

Each ship will feature a PureNOx Prime 100 system, which is the smallest of the three PureNOx Prime capacities and comprises one centrifugal separator.

The EGR systems will enable the ships to meet the recent implementation of Tier III NOx standards in Emission Control Areas (ECAs), particularly off the North American coast where the ships will be operating.

The VLECs be built in China by Dalian Shipyard and operated by United Ethane Carriers (UEC), a joint venture between Jaccar Holdings and Hartmann Group.
