K Line Opts to Equip Eco-Ship With Solar

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K Line”) has chosen to install Solar Frontier’s solar panels on its latest eco-RoRo.

The car carrier ship, Drive Green Highway, will have more than 900 of Solar Frontier’s CIS solar panels installed on the top deck, totaling 150 Kw peak of electricity generating capacity for all LED lighting. Compared to crystalline silicon solar panels, Solar Frontier’s panels generate higher electricity than and can function in hot and salt-mist environments.

The ship will also host greenhouse gas suppression systems in its engines.

Combining the innovative technology and design improvements, the ship’s  CO2 emissions will be reduced by 25%, its nitrogen oxides (NOx) by 50% and sulphur oxides (SOx) by 90%.

The car carrier is the first of eight similar ships to be built under K Line’s Drive Green Project, a project designed to reduce CO2emissions per transport vehicle, launched this week at a ceremony in Nagasu Port, southern Japan.
