Kongsberg agrees to market underwater glider systems

Kongsberg Underwater Technology is to produce, market, and continue development of two new underwater glider systems following negotiations with the University of Washington’s collaborative innovation hub, CoMotion.

  • Ocean gliders are a type of autonomous underwater vehicle that use fixed wings and changes in buoyancy rather than a propeller to obtain and transfer information regarding temperature, salinity and oxygen concentration.
  • Propulsion method enables missions of several months to be carried out, unlike propeller driven UAVs that can only function for a few days.
  • Deepglider can operate down to 6,000 metres and will be able to profile over 97% of the world’s oceans. Oculus is specifically designed for high performance, shallow water operation and has variable buoyancy, allowing it to operate from fresh water to sea water without the need to alter its static ballast.
