Liquefied natural gas carrier, Christophe de Margerie, has begun its journey across the Northern Sea Route to deliver cargo for Total Gas & Power in South Korea.
- Vessel is operated by Sovcomflot on behalf of Total, Novatek, CNPC and the Silk Road Fund, and is the first unescorted merchant LNG vessel to take this route.
- The vessel began its journey at the Snøhvit LNG export terminal in Norway and will reach South Korea using the Bering Strait in 15 days compared with the 30 days it takes using the Suez Canal.
- Christophe de Margerie is the first of a total of 15 planned LNG carriers that will be gradually deployed to take LNG all year around, without the need for escort icebreakers.
