LPG concept design shows 9% improvement in energy efficiency

The results of a joint industry project to develop a new liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) ship design concept have been announced.

  • Consolidated Marine Management (CMM), Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), Wärtsilä Oil & Gas and DNV GL developed a concept design to increase energy efficiency, reduce environmental impact and enhance safe transportation of LPG.
  • Compared with reference vessel the concept design, known as LPGreen, improves energy efficiency by 6-9%, while tank redesign increased carrying capacity by 1%, decreases loading duration by 30% and new cargo handling system reduces energy demand by 5%.
  • Design concept also shows the technical feasibility of a LPG propulsion concept that can result in a cut of up to 30% in fuel prices says George Dimopoulos, Principal Specialist in DNV GL and project manager for LPGreen.
