Matson Navigation Company Inc has signed a deal for USD 511 million with General Dynamics NASSCO to build two new combination container and roll-on/roll-off (Con-Ro) vessels that will feature an array of technologies to minimise fuel consumption and promote greener shipping.
The vessels will feature efficient hulls to save fuel, environmentally safe double hull fuel tanks, freshwater ballast water treatment systems (BWTS) as well as dual-fuel engines to facilitate operation on either cleaner liquefied natural gas (LNG) or conventional fuel oils.
The Lurline and Matsoniam Kanaloa Class vessels will therefore be able to reduce their emissions when operating on LNG as it contains virtually no sulphur oxides (SOx) and much fewer nitrogen oxides (NOx) than conventional fuel.
The ships will be built to meet Hawaii’s freight demands, while reducing environmental impact and improving efficiency.
The ships will replace three diesel powered ships that will move from active to reserve status.
