MEPC 69 Moves onto Air Pollution & Energy Efficiency

The 69th session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) has this afternoon moved onto ITEM 5: AIR POLLUTION AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY   (April 19, 2016).

The Commitee will now consider under Item 5:
1. The results of sulphur monitoring for 2015;
2. The interim report of the Correspondence Group on EEDI review required under regulation 21.6 of MARPOL Annex VI, together with information in the EEDI database;
3. The report of Correspondence Group on Fuel oil quality; and
4. The final report by the Chairman of the Ad Hoc Expert Working Group on Facilitation of Transfer of Technology for Ships.

The first agenda point tackled was the delivery of the delivery of the final report from the Facilitation of Transfer of Technology for Ships by the Chairman of the Ad Hoc Expert Working Group. The submission provided a report on discussion between IMO Member States on matters relating to technology transfer from developed to developing States.

Several member States including Brazil, UK, U.S, Canada, Poland, Belgium, Netherlands gave praise  saying that the group has done well and completed the work set out on time.  MEPC chairman, Mr Arsenio Dominguez then instructed the committee to keep updated on the project,  the secretariat must keep reporting to MEPC and then further actions will be taken as appropriate. He praised the group for completing the work in the time that was set up to do so.

The Secretariat also gave an update of the IMO Train the Trainer (TTT) course on energy efficient ship operation. This is a course that focusses on

ship management and operational issues for training including EEDI calculator for training, finding on GHG study 2014. It was agreed that this course had been well used and that other organisations should make use of it.
