Mitsui O.S.K. Lines’ (MOL) new hull design for its FLEXIE next generation car carrier is to reduce emissions and save fuel consumption thanks to its latest innovative features.
The FLEXIE hull’s rounded bow shape will minimise wind resistance and reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 2%, compared to today’s car carriers as part of its goal to cut wind resistance and utilise wind to help propel future ships.
Having previously developed the wind resistance reducing car carrier, Courageous Ace, which received Ship of the Year in 2003, the new energy-saving windshield for containerships utilises these previous efforts and is part of MOL’s research and development efforts to reduce resistance in participation of the Wind Challenger Project.
The new shape is the result of joint research by MOL, MOL Techno-Trade, Ltd. and Akishima Laboratories Inc. The hull design will be built at Minaminippon Shipbuilding Co., Ltd and is due for delivery in 2017.
