MOL Embarks On Big Data Trial

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has announced that it will launch trial of onboard data transmission and accumulation for its operated vessels to support efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

Using marine broadband services, MOL has launched the big data initiative in cooperation with the Ship Data Center Co., Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) that was established in late 2015.  The environment created will allow the collection and accumulation of big data from onboard to share in real -time between ship and shore.

MOL hopes that by using and analysing the big data, a comprehensive support system can be built to improve operational safety and economic operation, reduce emissions impacts, enhance ship management and promote high quality training and education for seafarers.

The trials will see MOL transport big data from MOL-operated ships to the Ship Data Center, where it be available for the entire maritime cluster. The idea is to promote innovation by sharing the data with the producers of ship suppliers, shipyards, ship classes, societies, universities and research institutes.

MOL states that it is working to create an environment where big data can be readily collected from onboard ships and transferred to other ships and to shore for maximum transparency and efficiency benefits.
