Cold Ironing Fact File:
Cold ironing is the term commonly used for when ships plug in to an onshore power supply whilst in port.
The uptake of shore-to-ship power solutions is increasing worldwide with the technology now allowing a completely seamless switch from seamless switch from on-board generation to shore power supply.
There is no disruption of services including lighting, heating and refrigeration making it a particularly popular option with cruise vessels.
Ships can shut down their engines thus eliminating air emissions as well noise and vibrations while berthed in ports.
As ports are often located in populated areas it is felt this can have a contribution to improved air quality.
