Navico, an integrated electronic navigation company, has secured International Maritime Organization (IMO) type approval for its SIMRAD MARIS ECDIS900 Mk 5 and Mk 15 electronic chart data information systems (ECDIS) by the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RMRS).
The approved navigation systems are designed for use onboard ships that are required to comply with the SOLAS Convention (Safety of Life at Sea Convention), as amended, that stipulates from July 1, 2012, newbuild passenger ships of 500 GT or more and new tankers of 3,000 GT or more must install ECDIS with suitable back up systems, with other rules governing other vessel types to be phased in to July 1, 2018.
The navigation systems can be used with a standard Windows PC interface to deliver precise navigation with comprehensive route planning and optimisation tools, integrated chart management and ordering, universal radar overlay, and optional highly customisable conning display. The Mk5 system comes with a 24- or 26-inch flat panel monitor and standard PC, while the Mk 15 has a 24-inch flat panel display and an integrated PC.
Following RMRS approvals last year for a suite of Navico/SIMRAD equipment, and a formal approval for the earlier generation MARIS900 Mk 4, this latest type approval is expected to make a significant impact in the commercial maritime and fishing sectors, particularly at a time when ECDIS is becoming mandatory for a large percentage of the world’s fleet in order to maintain high safety standards.
