New Zealand has ratified the International Maritime Organization’s Ballast Water Management Convention.

  • New Zealand is the latest country to ratify the Convention, which aims to reduce the transfer of species to non-native areas via ships’ ballast water.
  • The ratification brings the total number of States party to the Convention to 54, which represents 53.30% of world tonnage.
  • E. Mr. Lockwood Smith, High Commissioner of New Zealand to the United Kingdom, met IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim at IMO Headquarters in London yesterday to deposit the instrument of accession.
