NGO’s open letter to IMO Sec-Gen: “Get the job done”

A collective of environmental non-governmental organisations has sent an open letter to the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization, Kitrack Lim, to become a beacon of ambitious leadership as shipping works towards its decarbonisation goals.

The letter, signed by six groups, complements Mr Lim for his appointment for a second four-year term as the UN agency’s top post, and quotes some of his earlier words in underscoring the need to work quickly in deciding the decarbonisation strategy for the shipping industry.

It goes on to emphasis that the decisions that will need to be made will not be easy, and will require innovative policies and visionary leadership. The letter also says the lobby groups believe the IMO could help coordinate, share and drive the climate ambition of others.
