No Penalties for Early Movers on Ballast Water Tech Uptake

There is strong agreement that should be no penalisation for early movers who have already fitted ballast water systems.

Both the IMO and the ICS said that this was imperative at the Fathom & UK Chamber of Shipping’s Ballast Water Forum, taking place in London today.

The IMO Roadmap specifies that there will be no need to replace Ballast water Management Systems (BWMS) type approvals in accordance with current Guidelines (G8).

Moreover, BWMS which are operated and maintained correctly do not need to be replaced due to occasional lack of efficacy.

There will be no sanctions, warnings, detentions etc. solely due to occasional exceedance of D-2 if BWMS are installed and operated correctly.

At the upcoming MEPC 69, next week, a revision to G8 Guidelines is on the agenda and will be discussed and likely adopted, however this will not affect those ships that have already fitted systems.
