Norwegian Cruise Line Adopts Fuel Saving Technologies

Norwegian Cruise Line has received the first ship in its new Breakaway Plus Class that features a range of solutions for low fuel consumption, reduced emissions and overall efficient operation.

The Norwegian Escape is fuelled primarily by heavy fuel oil (HFO) but uses low sulphur fuel (LSF) and marine gas oil (MGO) as required.  The ship has been fitted with an Alfa Laval PureDry system to enable waste fuel recovery by treating waste oils and separating them into cleaned oil, water and super-dry solids. Waste heat recovery is also provided using Alfa Laval’s waste heat recovery boilers.

The ship also features an Alfa Laval multieffect plate (MEP) freshwater generator that allows smaller pumps and pipes to be used, reducing initial investment, providing easier installation and lowering energy consumption with subsequent reductions in CO2 emissions.

In addition, there is an Alfa Laval PureBilge system that cleans oily wastewater onboard vessels at sea, removing marine oil pollution to make bilge water safe for discharge overboard, and a 500 m3/h Alfa Laval PureBallast system to reduce the likelihood for non-native species transfer.
