NYK Joins Study To Bring First LNG Fuelling Port to Japan

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) is to partner with the Japanese ministry of land, infrastructure, transport and tourism to look into the viability of establishing a liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering station at the Port of Yokohama, Japan.

Following a committee meeting between Japan’s transport and economy ministries and representatives from Tokyo Gas and NYK, the Port of Yokohama may play host to Japan’s first LNG fuelling facility to help meet the growing demands of LNG in the region. Tokyo Gas has already set up and operates an LNG terminal in Yokohama that is expected to be used to assist with the project, while NYK has introduced tugboats that run on LNG fuel.

Officials from the city and the port’s operator will also be in attendance at the committee meeting held June 9.

Upgrading port facilities and purchasing LNG fuelling ships is expected to cost approximately 10 billion yen (US $93.1 million).
