OceanSaver has finalised all testing required for the United States Coast Guard (USCG) type approval application for its ballast water treatment system (BWTS).
Shipboard testing of the BWTS concluded along the Pacific coast of North America on May 5, with component testing finalised shortly afterwards. All tests met the USCG requirements.
The testing route included saline and brackish water ports of the San Francisco Bay, San Marco in Mexico and Tacoma, Washington, as well as freshwater ports of the US Pacific Coast. OceanSaver’s BWTS performed to USCG standards in highly variable conditions without disrupting the operation of the ship.
The OceanSaver BWTS uses filtration and electrodialytic disinfectant to remove 99.5% of organic load above 40 micronmeter. No chlorination is required making the system chemical-free.
The USCG FDA/CMFDA test method has been used, allowing OceanSaver to feel confident in its formal application once submitted to classification society and USCG. OceanSaver’s system has also gained full Class Approval by ABS and already holds DNV GL Class Approval.
Helle Hundseid, CEO at OceanSaver commented: “We expect to finalise the formal application within beginning of June, thus being among the very first BWTS vendors to submit an official application to the U.S. Coast Guard.”
The testing was carried out onboard Canada Steamship Lines’ (CSL), bulk carrier, Shelia Ann.
