Pacific and European countries put pressure on IMO to meet Paris Agreement target

A coalition of Pacific Island and European countries have agreed to work together to ensure the IMO provides its contribution to meeting the climate targets of the Paris Agreement.

  • Ministers met in Tonga April 24-28 and endorsed the work of a High Ambition Coalition for Shipping.
  • Coalition will work to push the IMO’s efforts in ensuring a global temperature rise of no more than 1.5 degree Celsius.
  • Nicolas Udrea, negotiator for France on GHG at IMO says that the IMO has previously been very slow but there is new hope for progress on GHG emissions reductions.

Supports of the High Ambition Coalition for Shipping include Marshall Islands, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Tonga, Kiribati, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Sweden, Denmark, Antigua.
