Partnership Forged for Condition-Based Maintenance Project

MaK, Caterpillar’s Marine Asset Intelligence organisation and DNV GL have stuck up a partnership to  help ship owners and operators move from a time-based maintenance strategy to a condition-based maintenance strategy to increase transparency and reduce unnecessary maintenance and human intervention.

Through the project, the predictive analytics of Cat Asset Intelligence will be leveraged in accordance with DNV GL’s Survey Arrangement Machinery Condition Monitoring (CM) requirements, which recognises the benefits condition-based monitoring systems can bring to ship owners.

The Cat Asset Intelligence analytics can validate the condition of equipment, providing transparency and helping to reduce unnecessary maintenance costs by helping to determine when maintenance is actually required.  Furthermore, unnecessary human intervention, which has been shown as a contributing factor in over 80% of failures, can be eliminated using data analytics.

Predictive analytics further enhance the capability to identify issues before the arise to help prevent failure and downtime independent of maintenance schedules.

The project is to begin using a vessel powered by a new Mak M 46 dual fuel engine.  Cat Asset Intelligence and the Survey Arrangement Machinery CM will be used to operate the technology in the most reliable way possible.

Karl Vollrath, Product Support Manager for MaK commented: “We are excited to bring together the leading MaK dual fuel engine technology together with the analytics of Cat Asset Intelligence to continue to drive increased value to our customers.  This effort will enable our customers to further increase the availability and decrease the low total operating cost of the MaK medium speed engines by optimising maintenance practices and avoiding failures”.
