Peru Ratifies the Ballast Water Management Convention

Peru has acceded to the Ballast Water Management Convention, making it the 51st State representing 34.87% of the world’s merchant fleet tonnage to do so to date, based on the latest global tonnage figures. The 35% global tonnage entry into force threshold is now only short by 0.13%.

The highly impactful International Maritime Organization (IMO) treaty was developed to counter the threat to marine ecosystems by potentially invasive species transported in ships’ ballast water.

The Ambassador of Peru to the United Kingdom, H.E. Mr. Claudio de la Puente Ribeyro, met IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim at the IMO Headquarters in London on June 10, 2016 to hand over the instrument of accession.
