Polar research vessel to use Cathelco marine growth prevention systems

Polar research vessel, Sir David Attenborough, will receive marine growth prevention systems (MGPS) from Cathelco to protect the ship from biofouling.

  • Research vessel is being built by Cammell Laird and will be operated by the British Antarctic Survey once it enters operation in 2019.
  • Vessel will host up to 60 scientists and act as a floating laboratory to carry out research into climate change and future sea level rise.
  • MGPS include electrolysis tanks with copper and aluminium anodes, which reduce the ability for barnacles and mussel larvae to settle. Ions from the aluminium anode create an anti-corrosive layer to protect the internal surfaces of pipes.
