Port of Vancouver asks vessels to slow down

The Port of Vancouver, British Colombia, has asked shipowners and operators to lower their vessels’ speeds to 11 knots for a trial period when transiting the Haro Strait.

  • Between August 7 and October 6, 2017, vessels must reduce their speed between Discovery Island and Henry Island.
  • This will help the port to assess the relationship of lower vessel speed and the level of noise reduction that can be achieved to reduce the impact of underwater noise on whales.
  • AIS will be used to monitor and measure vessel participation rates and hydrophones to assess the impact of reducing vessel speed on underwater noise.
